Note: This was recorded before I attended a vigil at Farmer John Slaughterhouse in Vernon. I have sense gone, and actually made a committment to LA Animal Save to continue going on a regular basis to document the event.

More about LA Animal Save:
LA Animal Save is an extension of the global, love-based, Save Movement. We are grassroots activists and our first vigil was December 12th, 2016. We began with one pig vigil a month which quickly turned into one pig vigil a week and later added the cow and chicken vigils. From the very beginning, LA Animal Save has had an amazing partnership with the Vernon Police Department. The officers attend every pig vigil, making sure our right to demonstrate (bear witness) is upheld and everyone, activists and truck drivers alike, are kept safe.
More about The Save Movement:
"The Animal Save Movement is comprised of groups around the world who bear witness to pigs, cows, chickens, and other farmed animals en route to slaughter. Our goal is to create a respectful, nonviolent, eco-vegan society.
Animal vigils bring you face to face with the animals and the egregious injustice of animal exploitation and abuse. Our regular vigils, outreach events, and rallies target a local slaughterhouse, live market or animal feedlot.
We use a non-violent, love-based approach to community organizing as a means of being the change we want to see in the world. The approach is inclusive and welcoming to all. Through our slaughter-free city campaigns we can shut down animal farms and slaughterhouses and transition them towards plant based food systems.
We encourage you to bear witness of animals sent to slaughter in your own community. Find out if there is an Animal Save group near you (map of Save groups) or consider starting a Save group. We’ll help you with tips, resources, and support."
"When the suffering of another creature causes you to feel pain, do not submit to the initial desire to flee from the suffering one, but on the contrary, come closer, as close as you can to him who suffers, and try to help him." - LEO TOLSTOY
Have you ever seen animals on a slaughter truck? You can look away or you can come close and try to help. Bearing witness is being present in the face of injustice and intervening. The animals want you to be present to tell their stories and to end all animal exploitation.
Tolstoy says we all have a duty to bear witness. As painful as it may seem to initiate or to join animal vigils at slaughterhouses, it is actually empowering when done as a group. The paradox of painful yet meaningful and empowering aspects of bearing witness was captured perfectly by Vivikananda in the 19th century:
"But my heart has grown much, much larger, and I have learnt to feel [the suffering of others]”. - VIVIKANANDA
